Getting started

There have been times when I've wanted to get a quick message to someone while they're online without telling every other visitor to the site. I've been experimenting with a new product that will do this job. I think it has merit. Obviously, such a feature must be limited to registered, logged-in users. I've got a little more testing to do but I'm fairly confident that once people realise it's there it will provide a big advantage to our site.

I expect to be making an announcement tomorrow.

I've now installed a PMS - no, it's not some woman's "thing" - Private Message System.

I think this will be a big winner! You'll now observe, immediately below the login area above the Main Menu, a new item: Private Messages. This feature is available only for logged-in, registered users.

There are many features with this system: notification of new message arrival while you're online; notification of unread messages in your message area; the ability to block/unblock users so that they can't send messages to you; access to your PM mailbox from your profile; the ability to send a PM to another user from the forum. All in all, I'm rather pleased with the results.

I shouldn't have to write a detailed set of instructions for the new feature. You ought to be able to figure things out intuitively. If, however, you have problems then please start a discussion in the "Please help" category ... or you can PM me

I hadnt noticed anything different.:blush: Since you mentioned the page, I noticed "welcome stormyfeathers" which I dont remember seeing.

The forum component at The Quoroom is Kunena V 1.0.8. I realise that probably means absolutely nothing to all of you. For two over two weeks I've been following progress at the Kunena website with the new release. I've also been testing it on the "demo" site.

There has also been an update with the chat room software. I'm also ironing the creases out of that, too.

Because the forum is the most important feature of The Quoroom I want to be extra careful and not mess everything up. From my preliminary testing, it takes about 5 minutes to upgrade the software and, so far, it all seems to work well. I expect to perform the upgrade in a day or so. In the meantime, you're welcome to a preliminary look at the demo site but I doubt you'll notice much of a difference from what you see here.

I realise that the chat room isn't used a very great extent, however I have some good news. I was rather disappointed that the jpfChat component wouldn't load in the same page template as the rest of this site. (For those of you who have used it before, when you clicked the "Chat room" link a new window was opened.

I'm very pleased to say that the latest update of jPFChat now works as it's supposed to. So, in the next 10-15 minutes I'll be upgrading the software. Please don't try to use the chat room until then.

This place runs smoothly with no bullshit advertising all over it -- hear hear :woohoo:

I think that I've successfully upgraded the forum component. This has been a major concern for me for over two weeks and it's a blessed relief that it's worked as well as it seems to have.

You'll notice a couple of new features: when you're looking at discussion threads, new messages are identified by a green box in the top left corner of the post like this:

There's also an advanced search function allowing you to refine search results.

A couple of minor problems in earlier versions have been fixed and a couple still remain. If you find errors in the way the forum works, please let me know ASAP.
