Does anyone use "Hotmail" any more? was created by sozzled
When MSN Groups was around, I used MSN Hotmail (since renamed Windows Live Hotmail) a fair bit. Mostly, my Hotmail account was there to complement my MSN Groups activities. Let me be candid: Windows Live Hotmail isn't the best webmail system in the world, now is it? For years, Microsoft has lagged behind other webmail providers, like Yahoo! Mail and GMail, and it's still considered a second-class product. Now that MSN Groups is cactus, do people still make use of Windows Live Hotmail as a "regular thing"?

I realise that our regular contributors to The Quoroom use Hotmail, but what about the rest of you? Is Hotmail on the decline if, as I suspect, people are so fed up with Microsoft that they're abandoning ship in favour of better and more reliable products? I've been considering whether or not I should keep a Hotmail account at all because, these days, it's becoming a hassle having to enter my username/password every time I want to login ever since I've lost the convenience of a single login when MSN Groups got the chop.

What do people think about Hotmail? Let's hear from you, particularly those of you who do not regularly post to The Quoroom. Is Hotmail dead, too, in your view? :S

If you think I'm wrong then say "I think you're wrong". If you say, "You're wrong", how do you know?

Yes! I use Hotmail everyday. It is one of my primary email addresses. I also chat on messenger everyday. I chat to my son whom is working in Beijing.

Thank you for replying - and welcome to The Quoroom :cheer:

I was curious about whether people made much use of Hotmail these days; like I said, there are better products on the market. Over the past week, I sent several dozens (probably a couple of hundred) of e-mail invitations about The Quoroom. Most of those e-mail addresses were Hotmail ones ... but a sizeable 15% of the emails bounced from addresses that are now defunct/retired/obsolete. Of the remaining 85% of the e-mails that I despatched, there was only a handful of people who responded in any kind of way. Which makes me wonder whether people have "given up" on Hotmail since MSN Groups closed down.

What concerns me, though, is that if people are giving Hotmail the flick, will that mean that we may lose touch with many Quoroom members who registered with Hotmail addresses?

Yes I always use my hotmail for emails. The schools have my email address, all my friends & relatives also. Hotmail is my main email contact address. I also have a yahoo email address but much prefer the fastness of hotmail and the easy navigation. One can connect the contacts from facebook to Hotmail if one so wishes or connect the contacts (people in address book) to ones network in windows live spaces.

Thank you for your replies :)

I was talking about this subject last night over dinner. It seems that the use of "traditional" web-based e-mail services are declining in fashion with many people these days preferring to exchange information via Facebook and other social networking services.

Although Facebook doesn't provide its users with an email address, per se, that is a point of reference that could be used in conjunction with a site's registration procedure (as used here at The Quoroom) perhaps this is a "sign of the times"? In fact, do people obtain a webmail account only for the purposes of registering with a website ... and then never use it again? If the suggestions made over last night's dinner are to be trusted, more people these days are foregoing "traditional" e-mail in favour of social networking sites' near-to-instant messaging features. :S

Well, that's a bit of a bother, isn't it? :-o

Yesterday I sent a test e-mail with a "read request" to a dozen Hotmail addresses. The idea of a read request is that when someone opens the e-mail, they automatically send a response back to me. I've tested the feature with Hotmail and I know that it works. Now, either my test e-mails all went into the recipients' junk mail folders - most likely they did - or the recipients haven't signed into Hotmail for ages. This is what makes me wonder whether there's a large slice of the user population who, once upon a time relied heavily on Hotmail, now have given Hotmail a wide berth. Hmmm :S

I'm not quite ready to abandon Hotmail yet (just like I haven't rid myself of my Commonwealth Bank Mastercard that I've had for thirty-something years because I couldn't be bothered changing banks) ... but the thought is certainly "on the cards".

If you think I'm wrong then say "I think you're wrong". If you say, "You're wrong", how do you know?

I only have one email account and its a Hotmail one. I have had it for 11 years now and the thought of advisng friends, family and work of a new address is enough for me to put up with any little complaints I have of it.

And if I am truthful, I don't have any complaints:)

OK ... er ... thanks for all of that, Linda :side:

I did a quick check on Google about people using Hotmail and I discovered this interesting item: Does anyone even use Hotmail anymore? It makes you wonder, doesn't it, about whether Microsoft has really lost the plot in the last year or two! :S
